Understanding OHLC Prices: Open, High, Low and Close Explained
MarketLens Editorial · 12 Oct 2026
Every daily price bar is summarised by four numbers: Open, High, Low and Close (OHLC).
- Open is the first traded price of the session. It often differs from the previous close because news arrives overnight; this difference is called the opening gap.
- High and Low are the extremes reached during the session. The distance between them is the session's range.
- Close is the final price and is the value most indicators use.
Why OHLC matters
A close alone hides how volatile a day was. Two days can close at the same price, one after a calm session and one after a wild swing. The range tells you which.
How MarketLens forecasts OHLC
MarketLens first forecasts the Close using an ensemble of statistical models. It then estimates the Open from the instrument's typical opening gap, and the High and Low from the median upper and lower "wicks" seen historically. The result is always internally consistent: the High is never below the Open or Close, and the Low is never above them.
Remember that each value is an estimate with uncertainty, not a promise.
